November 2019: The Best Content I Consumed This Month

It’s that time again, my monthly recap of my writing progress, interesting articles, videos, and podcasts I read/watched/listened to, and books I finished. Check out the past installments here.

Writing update

Well, NaNoWriMo is over and I didn’t hit 50,000 words. But I did have my best month of writing on Guild of Magic so far and I’m hoping to keep it going in the coming months.

I also started writing a children’s chapter book tentatively titled Shearwater Adventures. This project started its life as a picture book that my friend (the extremely talented Meir Srebriansky, who did the gorgeous cover of Guild of Tokens) dreamed up when our kids were a year old. Unfortunately life got in the way and now our oldest kids have outgrown picture books and are just starting to read chapter books.

When my older daughter brought home a particularly stupid chapter book (and its sequel and the sequel to that), I knew we had to revive our project as a chapter book that our kids would love to read. So with chapter 1 in the books, I read it to my older daughter and her immediate feedback was “it should be more like that [stupid chapter book], except instead of the boy having two girls who he doesn’t like, there should be three girls he doesn’t like.”

At least now I know that she isn’t going to like the book just because her dad wrote it.

Stuff for writers

  • Russell Nohelty recently relaunched his podcast, The Complete Creative, with a great interview with Marv Wolfman, creator of The New Teen Titans and the Crisis on Infinite Earths limited series. Lots of good stuff about creating iconic characters and creative collaboration
